Trataka Meditation

Trataka is a yogic meditation technique in which the practitioner gazes steadily at a fixed object, usually a candle flame, without blinking. It improves concentration, mental clarity, and inner awareness.

Trataka Meditation – Steps

• Sit comfortably with your spine straight.

• Place a candle flame at eye level.

• Gaze steadily at the flame without blinking.

• Close your eyes when they become tired.

• Observe the after-image between the eyebrows.

• Repeat for 2–3 rounds and relax

Benefits

• Improves concentration and memory.

• Calms the mind and reduces stress.

• Enhances focus and mental clarity.

• Strengthens eye muscles and may reduce eye strain.

• Prepares the mind for meditation.

Contraindications

 Avoid if you have an eye infection, recent eye surgery, or severe eye disorders.

 Do not strain the eyes or continue if they become painful.

 People with epilepsy or light sensitivity should practice only under expert guidance.

Time of Practice

 Best practiced in the early morning or evening in a quiet, dimly lit room.

Duration

 2–5 minutes for beginners, gradually increasing to 10–15 minutes.

Awareness

 Keep your awareness on the object of focus (candle flame) and observe the after-image with closed eyes without distraction.
